The Group-ESDM

Group-Based Early Start Denver Model (GESDM)

The Group-Based Early Start Denver Model (GESDM) is an adaptation of ESDM designed for group settings, allowing children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to receive intervention within community programs. Implemented and studied at La Trobe University in collaboration with Dr. Sally Rogers’ team—including Dr. Giacomo Vivanti and Dr. Cynthia Zierhut Ursu — GESDM integrates social learning opportunities with individualized support.

Why GESDM?

  • Encourages peer interactions and cooperative play
  • Provides natural opportunities for communication development
  • Supports educational and social goals in a structured group setting
  • Enables treatment in existing community centers

Inclusion in Community Preschools

Through inclusion programs, children with ASD participate in regular preschool classes like any other student. Each child is supported by an Instructional Assistant (IA) who helps them navigate daily routines, engage with peers, and practice social skills. Teachers and IAs facilitate small playgroups within the classroom, creating structured learning opportunities tailored to each child’s developmental goals. These inclusive settings provide meaningful, natural opportunities for social growth while ensuring individualized support.

Implementation at Early Days Autism Center (EDAC)

At EDAC, we are committed to expanding GESDM programs in Sacramento and the Bay Area, fostering partnerships with similar initiatives worldwide. We believe peer models are crucial for social development, just as they are for all children.

Partnering with Every Child, EDAC founded Every Child Bay Preschool in El Cerrito and Every Child Oaks in El Dorado Hills.

📘 The GESDM Manual (2017) documents this approach and its research-backed outcomes

current EDAC GESDM projects include:

Parent Coaching (P-ESDM) play groups– Evidenced based parent coaching on the ESDM strategies. The group setting allows parents to share and learn together and to establish community connections. The children enjoy group activities and peer play while parents support their play.

EDAC groups are currently running in the Sacramento and Bay Areas.

In this program, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) join regular preschool classes alongside their peers. Each child is supported by an interventionist (Instructional Assistant, or IA) who facilitates their participation in daily routines, helps them engage in play with classmates, and guides them in practicing social skills. The child takes part in all classroom activities alongside their peers, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion.

To further support learning in an inclusive environment, the IA or class teacher organizes small playgroups. These groups are carefully structured to provide tailored learning opportunities that align with the child’s individual needs and developmental goals. This controlled and personalized approach ensures that every child can thrive while building meaningful connections with their peers.
